Author formats include DOC/DOCX, ODT, RTF, PDF, and IDML; designed layouts and complex Office files may need post-processing.

A broad language count does not establish equal engine support or quality for every pair; have a bilingual reader check narrative voice.

Keep a long document in one translation project

Upload a complete book or document, review the translated content, then export the file. Smartcat supports Word, OpenDocument, PDF, and InDesign IDML among its formats; OCR handles scanned text. Complex formatting may still need cleanup after translation.

Reuse approved passages across revisions and editions

Translation memory saves source sentences alongside their approved translations when a reviewer confirms a segment. Those pairs can be reused in later projects. Glossaries separately specify preferred terms and words that should stay untranslated, which suits recurring series names and specialist vocabulary.

Reviewed translation-memory matches and repetitions do not consume Smartwords on the current plans. That makes the saved work useful when a revised edition repeats large parts of an earlier manuscript.

Reference context, translation memory, and reviewers

Give the translator the book's supporting context

Reference files can supply a style guide, earlier edition, or background material without being translated themselves. Translator Coworkers and translation profiles combine that guidance with the selected engines, glossaries, and memories; project templates reuse the configuration.

Bring human review into the same workflow

Collaborators can revise the translation before its formatted export. Professional marketplace review is an additional service, with access depending on the plan. The current entry plan is billed annually and includes 100,000 Smartwords, so estimate the whole book and review cost together.

Recorded requirements and limits

  • Create a workspace and upload the document. Smartwords are an annual usage allowance; top-ups and professional review add to the cost.
  • Supported author formats include DOC/DOCX, ODT, RTF, PDF, and IDML. Complex Office files and designed layouts may require post-processing.
  • Choose the translation engine and language pair. A broad advertised language count does not establish equal support or quality for every configured engine.
  • A complete-book file can remain one project, but the translated draft still needs bilingual review for narrative voice and publication readiness.
